Accessibility

The standard

This website is built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. It was designed and tested against that standard from the first line of code.

What has been done

Contrast. Every combination of text and background is computed from the design tokens, and none is below 4.5:1 for body text or 3:1 for large text. Colors that cannot carry text (the three practice colors, and the light blue used on dark grounds) are used only for shapes, never for words and never behind them.

Keyboard. Everything that can be used with a mouse can be used with a keyboard. Focus is always visible, with a designed outline in place of the browser’s default. There is a skip link to the main content as the first thing on every page. The navigation menus are native disclosure elements, so they behave the way the browser and your assistive technology expect.

Without JavaScript. Every page is fully readable and every page is reachable with JavaScript switched off. Nothing is hidden behind an animation, a reveal or a script that has to run first.

Motion. There is one animation on the site: the mark in the corner turns when you move between pages. If your system asks for reduced motion, it does not turn. Nothing autoplays, nothing parallaxes, and nothing takes over your scrolling.

Structure. One h1 per page, headings in order, landmark regions, and lists marked up as lists. No text is baked into an image. The only images on the site are the headshots on the team page, and each one carries a description naming the person and their role.

Small screens. The site is designed and checked at 390, 768, 1024 and 1440 pixels wide. Nothing scrolls sideways at the narrowest of those.

Targets. Every control clears the 24 by 24 pixel minimum, and the ones you are likely to use on a phone (buttons, navigation items, the stage rail) are 44 pixels or more. The footer’s links are set small deliberately, and still carry a target larger than the minimum.

Text. You can enlarge the text in your browser without losing content or function. Line lengths are held to a comfortable measure for reading.

How it is checked

Automated accessibility testing runs against every page of the site as part of the build, and any critical or serious issue stops it. That catches perhaps half of what matters, so pages are also checked by keyboard, at four widths, with JavaScript disabled, and with reduced motion on.

Known limitations

None are known at the time of writing. That is a statement about what has been tested, not a claim that nothing is wrong: automated tools miss things, and the people who built this site are not the people who will find its problems.
